Born in Chicago, IL, Steve Kamerling has been playing music since he fell in love with the guitar when he was 10 years old.

While living in Chicago, he studied for several years under the tutelage of Mike Conforti and Dr. Edward Myers. He credits these mentors with opening a world of musical possibilities to him through positively encouraging the enhancement of his musical capabilities.

This experience guided him to learning more about music and, because of this, his love affair extended to the bass.

Even more, he loved to sing. In his words, "I sang just about every song I heard on the radio, so when I learned how to play the guitar comfortably, I combined every aspect and haven't been able to stop since."

Today, Steve is proud to call Kalamazoo, MI his home and can often be seen performing with various locally and nationally known musicians including Joe Ferguson, Matt Landon, former KSO Concertmaster Dr. Barry Ross, and OFB3. He has performed in the past with International Opera Star Susan B. Anthony, Ken Morgan, Earlie Braggs, John Wegge, John Chamberlin, Pieces of Dreams, and Unleashed.

He is an accomplished musician, having performed at the New Orleans Jazz Festival, Baton Rouge Blues Festival, Baton Rouge ‘Fest for All,’ Thorn Apple Jazz Fest, Arts Concert of Oceana Country, Kalamazoo Blues Festival, Kalamazoo Institute of Arts’ ‘Art and All That Jazz’ Series, and Kalamazoo Russian Festival.

He is a regular performer at Brick & Brine in the Radisson, the Hilton Garden Inn, and The Park Club. Past venues have included the Kalamazoo Institute of Art Festival, Gull Lake Country Club, Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra League, Fontana Chamber Arts Galas, The Wine Loft, Winston’s, and the Beacon Club.

As a well-respected musician, Steve consistently draws the praise of those who perform with him. During his performances, the audience is treated to the stylistic musings of some of his own musical influences. From the genius of George Benson and Russell Malone on guitar; to the vocal stylings of Sam Cook, Cassandra Wilson, and Harry Connick Jr.; to the rhythmic groove of Sam Jones and Ron Carter on the bass, Steve captivates the audience by blending these different styles.

Every performance is a tribute to these iconic influences fused with modern day covers as well as the classics that span generations.

Steve's style can be considered ridiculously eclectic, with an entree of groove-oriented bluesy jazz, a side of rock in a contemporary sauce, topped with a few drops of New Orleans soul.

In other words, his performances are a feast for the listening ear.
